What the print holds

The South West Coast Path on paper

Nothing else in this collection prints like it. The South West Coast Path is not a route across a country, it is an outline of one, so the sheet reads as a map of the peninsula drawn with a single line. Somerset and north Devon run west, Cornwall narrows to the point, and then the whole thing turns and comes back east along the south coast to Dorset.

Because the path follows every inlet, the line carries detail that a road map throws away. The Camel, the Fal, the Helford and the Dart each show as a deep notch where the walker has to go inland to a bridge or a ferry; the Lizard and the Start read as sharp corners. Those notches are the reason a hundred and sixty kilometres of the path's length exists at all.

There are gaps, and they are honest ones. The path crosses about a dozen estuaries by ferry, and OpenStreetMap does not draw water as walking, so the line stops at one slipway and starts at the other. At this scale they read as the crossings they are.

It is drawn landscape, because the peninsula is. At A3 the whole coast fits with the estuaries readable; at A2 the coves come out. Most people who buy it have done a stretch and intend to do the rest.

A word on scale. At A3 the whole thing is legible but the coves are suggestion rather than detail; at A2 you can find the beach you stayed above. People who have walked the lot tend to go large, and people who have done a fortnight of it tend to frame the fortnight instead.

What to frame

Each opens the Studio already framed. Change your mind there — the path, or a day of it.

How it works

From the Studio to your wall in three steps.

The Heatmap print: a year of London runs layered into one map of familiar roads
Step 01

Choose your subject

Connect Strava in one tap for a race, a ride or a whole year. Or search for a place, type a postcode for your street on the old Ordnance Survey, or add a photograph — none of those needs an account.

The Contours print: a year of runs drawn as density contours, the ground darkest where the miles repeat
Step 02

Choose your style

Start from a finished design and make it yours: the words, the colours, the size. Twenty-three styles for your own miles, four treatments for a place, six layouts for a photograph, and the old survey as drawn or in your colours.

The Distance rings print: one ring for every activity of the year, the longer arcs the longer days
Step 03

We print and frame it

Pick a frame, check out, and it is printed to order on fine-art paper, framed by hand and posted to you, tracked.

Good to know

Why does the line have breaks in it?

Because the path does. A dozen estuary crossings are made by ferry, and the print draws walking rather than boats. Each gap is a real crossing rather than missing data.

It says 1,061 km and the association says 1,014.

The path's custodians measure the walked route; the print measures the mapped line, which follows the cliff edge more faithfully than a measuring wheel can. Neither is what your feet will record over two months.

Can I print one county's worth?

Yes — Devon, Cornwall or Dorset alone, or a single week of it. Open the Studio from this page and drag the frame until it holds what you walked.

I have not walked the whole thing. Can I still have it?

Yes. The print draws the South West Coast Path itself — the path as it is waymarked, end to end — with or without a walk of your own on it. People buy it before they set off as often as after.

Can it show my own walk instead?

It can show both. Connect Strava and the Studio draws your days along the path — the miles you actually covered over the line as it is mapped, with your time on feet and your climb beneath.
