What the print holds
The The Ridgeway on paper
The Ridgeway is the cleanest line of any British National Trail, and the print shows why. It rides the chalk, so it does not wander: from the stones above Avebury it runs north-east along the downs in long straight sections, crosses the Thames at Goring, and then picks up the Chilterns escarpment and keeps going until the ground runs out at Ivinghoe.
Drawn whole, the Thames crossing at Goring is the hinge. Everything west of it is open downland and the line is spare, with few settlements near enough to print. East of it the country closes in — beech hangers, villages in the combes — and the map beneath the path gets busier even though the path itself does not change character.
That contrast is the pleasure of this one on a wall. Half the sheet is almost empty and half is dense, and the line is the same width all the way across, which makes the emptiness look deliberate rather than unfinished.
It suits a wide frame and a lot of margin. People who walk it tend to do it in five or six days, and it is one of the few National Trails that a family can finish together, which is why it is bought as a shared thing more often than most of the others — one sheet, several names underneath it.

Good to know
Is it really the oldest road in Britain?
It is routinely described as such, and the chalk ridge has carried traffic since the Neolithic. The print does not make the claim on the paper — it draws the National Trail as it is waymarked today, which follows the old line for much of its length but not all of it.
Why does the line look so straight?
Because the ground is. A ridge route has one obvious way to go, and the path takes it. Compared with a coast path, which is forced into every inlet, the Ridgeway barely deviates.
Can I print just the Chilterns half?
Yes — open the Studio from this page and drag the frame. Anything from the whole path down to a few kilometres of it will draw.
I have not walked the whole thing. Can I still have it?
Yes. The print draws the The Ridgeway itself — the path as it is waymarked, end to end — with or without a walk of your own on it. People buy it before they set off as often as after.
