Strava Year in Sport as a Print — Your Year, One Square a Day

Every December Strava sends you a Year in Sport: the total, the biggest month, the longest day. It lives in the app for a week and is gone. A print of the same year stays. Year in Motion is the one most people make, one square a day; there are four others that read a year differently.

The five prints that read a year

  • Year in Motion: 365 squares in a calendar grid, shaded by the day's distance, blank on rest days. The streaks and the gaps both show.
  • The heatmap: every route of the year layered on the map until the roads you know best glow.
  • Solar miles: one ray per activity around a centre, in date order, as long as the distance. The summer is obvious.
  • Distance rings: a ring per activity, the long ones reaching round.
  • Twelve chapters: twelve columns, one per month, the plainest chart there is.

Only the heatmap needs GPS. The rest count treadmill and indoor sessions, which for a British winter matters.

When to order it

The print draws the year to date, so December's print is missing the last squares and January's is complete. People do both: order in early December for Christmas delivery and accept the last two weeks blank, or give a voucher and let the runner order on New Year's Day. The product page shows the Christmas order date for the UK.

What goes on it

The title is yours: the year, a name, the goal it was for. Beneath the grid the print carries the totals, activities, distance and the days active, and a line for what you want to say. Every part can be moved, sized or removed in the Studio, and the squares take a colour of your own.

A year that was not a running year

Year in Motion counts every activity: running, cycling, walking, swimming, the gym session logged as a workout. Filter to one sport for a runner's year, or leave everything in. A triathlete's grid has almost no blank squares, which is its own kind of print.

Do I need the Year in Sport from Strava?

No. The print reads the activities themselves; Strava's summary is a nice way to notice the year is worth printing.

Can it be a running streak?

Yes: a streak is a run of filled squares with no blanks, and it shows.

What size?

A3 (12 × 16 in) reads clearly on a wall; A2 makes each square large enough to write a date in.

How it works

From the Studio to your wall in three steps.

The Heatmap print: a year of London runs layered into one map of familiar roads
Step 01

Choose your subject

Connect Strava in one tap for a race, a ride or a whole year. Or search for a place, type a postcode for your street on the old Ordnance Survey, or add a photograph — none of those needs an account.

The Contours print: a year of runs drawn as density contours, the ground darkest where the miles repeat
Step 02

Choose your style

Start from a finished design and make it yours: the words, the colours, the size. Twenty-three styles for your own miles, four treatments for a place, six layouts for a photograph, and the old survey as drawn or in your colours.

The Distance rings print: one ring for every activity of the year, the longer arcs the longer days
